Life Can Be Beautiful.: If I Ever Have a Daughter

emaxie:

If I ever have a daughter, I want to raise her to feel good about her body, even though the media will constantly attempt bring her down, and make her feel horrible about herself. I will teach her that no amount of money will solve any “problems” she thinks she has.

I will teach her to not allow the media to decide what is “beautiful” and to make her own opinions about what she considers to be beauty. I want her to to fully understand how important it is to think critically about everything she watches and reads. I will teach her that advertising is just a capitalistic ploy to make her spend money on things she does not need. She will be taught that the Dove campaign for “real beauty” is a load of crap brought to us by the same people who bring us Axe deodorant, Ponds skin products and Slim Fast and that the contradictory nature deserves questioning.

I will teach her that just because someone is an authority figure, doesn’t mean they are right, including myself. I will teach her that some laws are against our rights, and that just because it’s a law, doesn’t mean it’s right.

I will teach her that just because she is a woman and has a menstrual cycle doesn’t make her “gross” or “unclean” and that these are just arbitrary things that we have been conditioned to believe about ourselves as women (thanks, in part, to religion).

I will teach her the importance of being actively involved in her community, education, and politics.

I will teach her that having sex doesn’t make her a bad person and it doesn’t make her dirty. Sex is a personal choice that she alone has control over; but I will also teach her that there are repercussions for every choice we make, and that responsibility, education and intelligence are key ingredients to making the best choices for ourselves.

I will teach her that men and women are equal and deserve equal treatment in every facet of life. Men and women are different, yes, but difference does not, and should not mean that we get treated differently (based on what’s between our legs).

I will teach her to read and I will try my best to foster a love of reading.

I will teach her the importance of finding a partner who respects her, her family and her friends. I will teach her that there are many different types of people, and that all of them deserve love and respect and that their skin colour, sexual orientation, gender/sex, and everything else they are born with, have absolutely no bearing on how she should treat them. I will teach her that gender is an arbitrary concept that has been fabricated by the media.

I will teach her to stand up for what she believes in and to fight for her rights as a person and as a woman.

I will teach her to consider others in the choices she makes and how important it is, especially in this day and age, to realize that everything she consumes has an impact on the environment and the people/animals/plants that inhabit it. I will teach her that eating meat is unnecessary, and the only reason we think we “need” it, is because of advertising, corporations and capitalism; but I will also teach her that the choice is hers to make.

Above all, I will teach her to question my teachings.

I was intrigued to see it. I want to know who that guy with the blonde curls was, at the front of the stage with no clothes on
